The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association Community Service Fund was formed in 2011 to help foster and promote the Long Island Hispanic community’s legal, educational and charitable missions, including providing scholarships to students and charitable assistance to worthy agencies and groups that serve the Long Island Hispanic community.

Since that time we have used our fundraising efforts to support numerous local and community groups including groups that advocate on behalf of victims of domestic violence, children, safer communities, economic development and the poor; victims of Super Storm Sandy and victims of the February 2013 Hempstead fire. We have also with our generous partner Bethpage Federal Credit Union developed the following fellowships and scholarships for Law School students:

Touro Law School Equity and Criminal Justice Fellowships

The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association Community Service Fund and Bethpage Federal Credit Union have sponsored two paid fellowships for Touro Law Students at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office during the Summer of 2012 and Summer of 2013. Applicants had to be a 1L or 2L in good-academic standing and member of Touro's Latin American Law Student Association (LALSA). The preferred candidate also had to be bilingual, have an interest in pursuing a career as a district attorney, have ties to Long Island or the Long Island Hispanic community and have done community service in the Hispanic community. All applications were reviewed by a faculty committee designated by Touro Law School.

Hofstra Law School Equity and Criminal Justice Fellowships

The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association Community Service Fund and Bethpage Federal Credit Union have sponsored two paid fellowships for Hofstra Law Students at the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office for the Summer of 2013. Applicants had to be a 1L or 2L in good-academic standing and member of Hofstra's Latin American Law Student Association (LALSA). The preferred candidate also had to be bilingual, have an interest in pursuing a career as a district attorney, have ties to Long Island or the Long Island Hispanic community and have done community service in the Hispanic community. All applications were reviewed by a faculty committee designated by Hofstra Law School.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union Thomas Gill Memorial Scholarship

The Bethpage Federal Credit Union Thomas Gill Memorial Scholarship is a 3-year, full tuition scholarship aimed at enhancing diversity of the student population at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University and assisting a student from Long Island who demonstrates academic achievement, financial need and a commitment to Long Island. The Scholarship is for a student entering the law school in the Fall of 2013. It includes:

• Full tuition scholarship for all three years of law school, provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing.

• A paid summer internship at Farrell Fritz, P.C. after the first year of law school, which may be renewed based on performance for the second year. Bethpage Credit Union will arrange for a second summer internship and provide a $5,000 stipend, should Farrell Fritz not extend an offer for the second year.
